What is ESTA?
The Electronic System for Travel Authorization is an automated system used to determine the eligibility of visitors to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program. An approved travel authorization is required for travel; it does not, however, guarantee admission at the port of entry.
Who needs to apply for ESTA?
Citizens of Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries planning to travel to the United States for tourism, business, or transit for stays of 90 days or fewer must obtain an approved ESTA prior to boarding a carrier to travel by air or sea.
When should I apply?
You should apply for authorization as soon as you begin planning your trip and no later than 72 hours prior to your departure to the United States. Most applications receive a decision within minutes; some may take up to 72 hours.
What is the fee?
The total fee for a new ESTA application is $40.27 USD. Payment is accepted by major credit or debit card at the end of the application process.
How long is an approved ESTA valid?
Generally, ESTA travel authorizations are valid for two years from the date of authorization, or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. A valid authorization permits multiple trips to the U.S. during that validity period, without requiring re-application.
What happens if my application is not approved?
If your application is not approved, you will be advised to apply for a visa through the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. Application fees are non-refundable regardless of the outcome, as processing has already been performed.
Can I change my information after submission?
You may update certain fields, such as your U.S. destination address, itinerary, and email address, after your authorization is approved. Changes to your passport number, name, date of birth, or country of citizenship require submission of a new application and payment of the fee.
